Christensen, Waldemar

CHRISTENSEN – Mr. Waldemar (Walt) Christensen, beloved husband of Mrs. Leona Christensen of Bassano, Alberta passed  away in Bassano on December 31, 1993 at the age of 77 years.

Walt was born in Jenner on March 21st, 1916, and received his schooling there. He  was a top ranked middleweight boxer from 1937 to 1940, and he joined the RCMP on January 4th, 1941. On December 31st, 1946 he married the former Leona Finlay. Through the years he had served at many locations  throughout Canada including; Oshwegen (Six Nation Reserve), Fort Erie, Ontario, Fort Good Hope, N.W.T., Fredricton, N.B., Woodstock, N.B., Winnipeg, Man., Portage La Prairie, Man., Aklavik, N.W.T., Yorkton, Sask., & Uranium City, Sask. Walt had been in charge of the City Detachment in Yorkton,  and was O.C. in Uranium City and Gunner. He retired from the RCMP in July of 1961 as  a sargeant and was a member of the RCMP Veterans Association. He moved to Bassano in 1961 and ranched there for the next 30 years. He was always active in the communities he lived in. While in Bassano, some of the positions he held included; Justice of Peace for 20 years, Chairman of the District Boy Scout Association, County Councillor from Oct. 1974-1981 and from Oct. 1986 to Sept. 1988. A member of both the Brooks and Bassano Hospital Boards for many years. Walt also served as Past Master of the Bassano Masonic Lodge, and had served as a member of the session of Knox Presbyterian Church. He will be remembered as a pleasant humourous person who liked helping people.

He was predeceased by his parents, Peter  and Blanche Christensen and brothers  Gordon Christensen (infant) and Jim Brodie.

Besides his loving wife of 47 years, Leona, Walt will be greatly missed by his children; Jill  (Bill) Maloney and their children, Jim, Bill, Donna, Chris, Jackie and Brian of Bassano,  Pat (Carl) Block and their children Jennifer (Daniele) Mereu, Mary Jane, Neil and Kristina of Abbey, Sask., George (Barbara)  Christensen of Vancouver, B.C., Diane (Tuan) Nguyen and their daughter Sarah all of Medicine Hat, AB., brothers; Bob Brodie and  family of Brooks, Peter (Monica) Christensen and family of Brooks, and Cal (Gladys) Christensen and family of Brooks, one sister; June (Dick) Edwards and family of Brooks and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Bassano, AB. on Tuesday, January 4th, 1994 at 3:00 p.m. with the Reverend Hector Rose officiating. Interment  followed in the Bassano Cemetery.    Pallbearers were Ed Moss, Ed Secondiak, Arnold Armstrong, Bob Armstrong, Neil McKinnon, and Tom Musgrove.
