Rathje, Ethel Lafern

RATHJE – Ethel Lafern (Wood) Rathje, beloved mother of Judy (Peter) McCrady and Ken (Cherith) Rathje, passed away peacefully at Bassano Hospital on May 26, 1993 at the age of 79 years.

Besides her children, Ethel is survived by her grandchildren, Brenda, Michael (Lynn), Scott McCrady, Steve (Marilyn), Kari (Vince) and Sheri Rathje, all of Calgary and Susan (Doug) Hook of Penticton, B.C. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Kevin and Melissa, children of Kari. She is also survived by two sisters, Edith Paul and Bertha (George) Fegan and one brother Bill (Chrissie) Wood.

Ethel was predeceased by her husband Freddy on October 1, 1982. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Clarence and Harvey Wood and her parents, Pearl and William Wood.

She was born at Elnora, Alberta on June 15, 1913. She married Freddy in 1936. They became involved in the honey business in the 1940s and in 1951 moved to Bassano, Alberta. Together, Fred and Ethel built their honey business. In the early 1960s, the honey plant was sold to Alpha and in 1976 the plant was sold again to Alberta Honey Producers Co-op. Fred and Ethel continued on as managers until January 1982. Ethel was respected and loved by all who knew her, both in the honey industry and the Bassano Community. She was a former Alberta Honey Queen and very active in the Bassano Willing Workers. In later years, she was an active participant in the Pioneer Damisters Drop In Center.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral service was held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Bassano on Saturday, May 29 at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Hector Rose officiating. Interment followed in the Bassano Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ken Rathje, Peter McCrady, Steven Rathje, Scott McCrady, Mike McCrady and Doug Hook.

If friends desire memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Bassano Hospital, the Bassano Cemetery Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society.
