COLBENS – Ben Oliver Colbens passed away in Brooks on September 2nd, 1998 at the age of 69 years.
Born in Medicine Hat on February 5th, 1929 Ben resided on the family farm and attended Renfrew School to Grade 10. He came to Brooks and lived in the EID Dorm while he finished his schooling. After his education Ben worked as a carpenter in Brooks. He married Ruth Skanderup in Tilley on June 7th, 1953 and they resided in Brooks until purchasing his father’s farm in the spring of 1954. Ben farmed and continued to do carpenter work until retiring to Brooks in 1996. He was very active in his church and the church choir and had also sung with Barbershop Quartets. He served as Secretary Treasurer for Tilley Mutual Telephone Company from 1965 until it was dissolved in 1977 and for Tirol Gas Co-op from 1969 until 1983.
Ben was predeceased by his wife Ruth on January 25th, 1997; infant son Keith on June 11th, 1955; son Clark on May 1st, 1978; his mother Nellie on April 19th, 1968; father Colben on February 3rd, 1976; sister Jean Frohberger, and brothers-in-law Sid Frohberger, John Kamp and Jim Brooks.
He married Ethel Mosby on October 27th, 1997. Ben will be best remembered for his laugh, his sense of humor, the love he had for his family and for his love of music.
He is survived by his wife Ethel of Brooks and her daughters Maxine and Loretta and their families; his sons Lloyd (Robbin) and Mark (Diane) all of Tilley; daughters Lois (Arnie) Hansen of Calgary and Edith (Doug) Madden of Red Deer; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; brother Tom of Airdrie; 5 sisters Sigrid Kamp of Bassano, Dorothy Brooks of Angus, Ontario; Phyllis Duke of Thunder Bay, Emma Colbens of Lacombe and Cleota Affleck of Fort MacLeod and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 8th from Trinity Lutheran Church, Brooks. Rev. John Theiss and Rev. Jim Krause officiating.
Honorary pallbearers were all his many friends. Active pallbearers were Jack Kamp, Bob Horen, Einard Larsen, Jim Stewart, Weldon Hobbs and Larry Busse.
