Alcock, Earl Martin

ALCOCK –  Mr. Earl Martin Alcock beloved husband of Mrs. Agnes Alcock of  Scandia passed away in Calgary on September 23rd at the age of 82 years.

Born at Riverbow, Alberta on May 24th, 1914, Martin started his working life at the age of 14 shearing sheep and in his twenties met the former Agnes Luton. They were married on October 24th, 1939 in Medicine Hat moving to BowCity to work in the strip mine and then returning to Medicine Hat to drive gravel trucks.

Their first child Grace was born in 1940 and shortly after they moved to Nacmine where Martin worked in the coal mine and broke ponies for extra money, Their first son, Gordon was born in 1943 and Martin went to work on the Alaska Highway in 1944. Their second son Gail was born in 1946 and in 1950 Martin began a lengthy farming career at Scandia moving to the farm in 1953 where their home still overlooks the Bow River.

Martin was predeceased by his mother Caroline in 1950, sister Hilda in 1969, brother Albert in 1970, father Ernest in 1975, brother Sam in 1978 and by his sister Liz in 1978. Besides Agnes his loving wife of 56 years, Martin is survived by his daughter Grace of Medicine Hat, two sons Gordon of Brooks and Gail (Sheila) of Rainier; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters Edith of Brooks, Lilly of Vauxhall, Mabel of Medicine Hat, Kate of Calgary and Irene of 100 Mile House as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 26th, at 2:00 p.m. from Brooks United Church, Rev. George Edmonds officiated.

Pallbearers were Sherry Alcock, Earl Alcock, Jon Martin Goebel, James McDowell, Barry Weatherby and Glenn Murphy.

Interment followed in the Brooks Cemetery. If friends desire memorial tributes may be made to either Canadian Cancer Society, Brooks office or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of Smith Funeral Home.
