BENDER – Josephine Maybel Bender of Brooks, Alberta died on January 4, 1988 at the age of 69 years.
She was born in Rosemary, Alberta on October 7, 1918 and later resided in Colorado before returning to the Clancy district in 1926 and to Rosemary in 1930.
She married Andrew Bender on January 25, 1942 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Duchess and resided in Duchess prior to moving to Rosemary in the spring of 1943 to farm with her husband in the spring of 1944 they purchased a farm in the Millicent district which they operated until Andy’s death in December 1949.
She was employed at Charlton’s Store in Millicent from 1950 to 1957 when she moved to Brooks where she was employed at the Brooks General Hospital. She was employed at the Brooks Health Centre and retired her position as housekeeping supervisor in March 01, 1983.
She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, was active in the Brooks United Church and the Christian Women.
She was predeceased by her husband Andy in 1949, her mother Maybelle in 1944, a brother Kenneth in 1944, her father Lelond in 1962.
Surviving are a daughter Violet Lea of Brooks, a son Bob and his wife Kathy of Lethbridge and grandchildren Gordon, Rick and Cheryl Lea and Rhonda, Roxanne, Shannon and Shelly Bender.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, January 9 at 2 p.m. in Brooks United Church with the Reverend Jim Hamilton and the Reverend Yoline Conley officiating. Interment followed in the Brooks Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were Tom Charlton, Rudy Peltzer, Roland Eastman, Abe Giesbrecht, Alfred Peltzer, Arnold Cyr, Ken Rust and Victor Christman. Active pallbearers were Gordon Lea, Barry Rust, Cameron Charlton, Rick Lea, Charles Charlton and Michael Maruno.
