Berg, Sigvard & Erna

BERG – Arvid Sigvard (Sig) Berg of Brooks, Alberta died on April 20, 1989 in the Brooks Health Centre at the age of 80 years.

He was born at Monsteros, Sweden on June 21, 1908 and came to Canada in 1923 at the age of 15 years with his brother Henrick. He worked for his brother Peter for three years at Millicent and following that time worked in summer for Ivor Peterson and in winter for the Macleay Ranch until 1932.

In 1932, Sig and Peter filed on a homestead in the Peace River County where he met and married the former Erna Beck in 1937. In 1938 they took up . residence at the farm on the John Ware Dam where they farmed and ranched until retiring to Brooks in 1975.

He enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Pheasant Promenadors Square Dancing Club and also enjoyed travelling which he did extensively.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers.

Surviving are his wife Erna of Brooks, three sons and their wives, Rand and Norma of Millicent, Ray and Karen of Valleyview and Grant and Patricia of Valleyview, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, a brother Henrick and his wife Anna of Brooks and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 25 at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Stephen Schubkegel officiating. Interment followed in the Brooks Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Elmer and Jean McBride, Raymond and May Rasmuson, Rufus and Stella Chudleigh and Alf and Muriel Lawson. Active pallbearers were Rudy Peltzer, Alfred Peltzer, Bruce Snape, Brian Berg and Alfred Berg.

If friends desire memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation or the C.N.I.B.

BERG – Erna Leanora Berg, widow of the late Sig Berg, passed away in Brooks on August 11th, 1999 at the age of 84 years.

Born on February 9th, 1915 in Hatton, Saskatchewan, Erna moved with her family to Sexsmith, Alberta in 1926 and later to the Baytree area. Erna and Sig Berg were married in Dawson Creek, British Columbia on January 5th, 1937 and moved to Duchess. They farmed In the Duchess area until retiring to Brooks in 1975. Erna was a member of the Duchess Lutheran Church and a devoted Christian. She belonged to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and had taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed her family, many friends, traveling, square dancing, cooking, sewing, hobbies and the gardens and flowers she raised. Erna will be remembered for her caring nature, generosity and kindness.

She was predeceased by Sig on April 20th, 1989; her parents, Emil and Barbara Beck; brothers, Albert and Ernest; sister Lydia and sister-in-law Joan Beck. Erna is survived by 3 sons, Rand and his wife Norma of Millicent, Roy and his wife Karen of Valleyview, Grant and his wife Pat of Valleyview; 8 grandchildren, Ryan, Reid (Denise) of Brooks, Todd of Bow Island, Jodi (Rick), Kip (Allan), Lane, Robyn, Kristi all of Valleyview; 2 great granddaughters, Megan and Wacey of Valleyview, her sister, Edna (Ray) Gruenke of Kelowna B.C.; her brother Leonhart (Caroline) Beck of Sidney, B.C.; sister-in-law Anna Berg of Brooks and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 18th from Trinity Lutheran Church, Brooks. Rev. Ferdinand Drewin officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are Alf and Muriel Lawson, Raymond and May Rasmuson, Rudy and Jean Peltzer, Alfred and Fern Peltzer, Helen Kraus, Hilda Morrison and Dave and Geraldine Griffith. Active Pallbearers are Donnie Berg, Brian Berg, Darwin Berg, David Peltzer, Robert Peltzer and Ken Ames. Interment to follow at Brooks Cemetery.
