He was born at Badger Lake and moved with his parents to the Tilley district in 1922. He attended school at Tilley and Olds and married Florence Edith Taylor on December 16, 1937.
He moved to Cranbrook in 1940 and spent some time as a gold prospector in the summer of 1941. He moved to Kimberley in 1941 and returned to Tilley in 1949 farming there until his semi-retirement.
He was predeceased by his wife Florence on September 3, 1955.
Surviving are a daughter Barbara Burton of. Medicine Hat, three sons James and wife Doreen of Tilley, Robert and his wife Faye of Scandia and David of Tilley, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother Arthur and his wife Edna of Tilley, a sister Dorothy Burton of Medicine Hat and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 10 at 10 a.m. in Smith Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Elmer Rawling officiating. Interment followed in the Brooks Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Donald Burton, Leroy Nelson, Dennis Petersen, Ole Sorensen, David Nielsen and Raymond Virostek.
Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
