Coombs, Benjamin Frank

COOMBS – Benjamin (Ben) Frank Coombs passed away at his home in Brooks on October 31st, 1998 at the age  of 78 years.

Born in Duluth, Minnesota on November 26th, 1919 Ben came to Canada with his family at the age of two months settling in Warner. He received all of his education there and later attended Business College in Lethbridge. Following college he moved to Calgary where he enlisted with the Canadian  Army in 1941. Ben served overseas as a Dispatch Rider in the Signal Core (R.C.C.S.) until his discharge in October, 1945. He married Kaye Fisher in Calgary on May 18th, 1946. Together they  moved to Milk River where Ben worked for Beaver Lumber as an assistant manager and later to Magrath and Carmangay as Manager. While in Carmangay Ben accepted the position of Secretary Treasurer of the Village of Carmangay and Little Bow Municipal Hospital. Ben returned to carpentry in  1961 moving with his family to Brooks where he was employed with Wilson Builders and later with Nova Corporation. He retired in 1984 but continued to do carpentry for several more years. He was an active community member and enjoyed working with the local young people. Ben started the Boy Scout Group in Carmangay and later worked  with the local Boy Scouts in Brooks. He  also coached hockey, baseball and was an avid curler and a member of the Lions Club. A very important part of Ben’s life was his involvement with the Brooks E.I.D. Legion where he served in many executive positions including President. Ben was proudly a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #63  where he will be remembered for his Oyster Fry. He will be fondly remembered  for his courage, integrity, sense of humor and his infectious laugh. Ben had tremendous pride in his wife, children and grandchildren.

His parents and 2 brothers-in-law predeceased him.

Ben is survived by his loving wife Kaye and their children Glenda Wright and her husband Lynn of Stettler and their children Darren, Brad and Kerilyn; Greg Coombs of Medicine Hat and his children  Kim (Rod) Lohmann, Shauna (Jim) and Ashley; Margo Nishida and her husband Kei of Taber and their children Sharla (Shawn) Span and Travis; Kathy Hemsing and her husband Joe of Duchess and their children Jason (Michelle Fyke and her daughter Taylor), Crystal, Jaclyn and Erin; great-grandson Dylan Span; 2 sisters Alice Dunk of Warner and Goldie Dickson of North Vancouver; 2 brothers Bill (Judy) Coombs of Ottawa and Dean (Vi) Coombs of Picture Butte; brother-in-law John Fisher of Edmonton and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00  p.m. on Tuesday, November 3rd from the Brooks United Church. Rev. George Edmonds officiated. Fraternal service provided by members of the E.I.D. Legion – Brooks. Honorary pallbearers were all of Ben’s many friends. Active pallbearers were Darren and Brad Wright, Jason Hemsing, Travis Nishida, Kim Lohmann and  Shauna Coombs.

Interment followed at Brooks Cemetery. In memory of Ben if friends desire memorial tributes may be made to either Brooks and District, Ambulance Association, Box 1906, Brooks, AB.
