Dickie, Ray Bedford

DICKIE· Ray Bedford Dickie passed away in Brooks on July 16th, 1999 at the age of 88 years.

Born on September 20th, 1910 near Oxford, Nova Scotia Ray went to work in the lumber industry with his father in 1923. After his father’s death in 1930, Ray took over responsibility for the family farm. He married Janet Phillips of Margaree Centre, Nova Scotia, in 1942 residing in Little Bass River, Nova Scotia where Ray worked primarily in the lumber industry. He was a logging contractor, cutting timber on his land, private lots and land owned by major lumber companies. Ray loved his work and retired in 1975. After retirement, Ray and Janet divided their time between Little Bass and Brooks, until 1990 when they moved permanently to Brooks. Ray loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling and reading, especially poetry.

Ray was predeceased by an infant daughter, Janet, four brothers and five sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife Janet and their children Brian and his wife Anne of Calgary, Wendy Gongal and her husband Karl of Duchess, Betty Lou Mercer and her husband Jim of Strathmore, Gordon and his wife Lynn of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and John and his wife Maggie of Burlington, Ontario; 12 grandchildren; his brother Alexander and his wife Nellie of Powell River, British Columbia and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 21st from Smith Memorial Chapel. Rev. George Edmonds officiating.

Pallbearers will be Brian Dickie, Gordon Dickie, John Dickie, Karl Gongal, Greg Dickie, Patrick Sherry, Jim Mercer and Jim Mercer Jr. Interment to follow at Brooks Cemetery.
