He was born in Abod, Hungary on March 17, 1907. He came to Canada on June 19, 1929 from Hungary and met his wife three weeks after arriving. They were married in 1937.
He worked in the mines from 1929 to 1944 in the Drumheller/Rosedale area. In 1944, he purchased a farm in the Brooks area and in 1946 he moved to the farm in Tilley. Semi-retiring in 1975, he lived on the farm in Tilley until his passing.
Surviving are his wife Rose, two sons, Joe, Jr. and his wife Linda of Tilley and Leslie and his wife Carol of Delia, one daughter, Eileen and her husband Ike Schroeder of Tilley, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Also surviving are one sister, Maria Szaszfai of Hungary, his mother-in-law, Cecelia Kakuk of Drumheller plus numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and one sister, all of Hungary.
Funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Monday, August 17, 1987 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Fr. John Petravicius officiating. Interment followed at Brooks Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Joe Valerian, John Suchy, Gabe Prohaszka, John Holiinda, Vince Fabian and Donald Kakuk.
Honorary pallbearers were Jack Genert, Mike Foldessy, Joe Szabo and Paul Rakos.
