Flanagan, John AlexanderFLANAGAN – John Alexander “Jack” Flanagan, beloved husband of Evelyn Flanagan of Duchess passed away in Brooks on April 10th, 1998 at the age of 78 years.

Born on May 11th (Mother’s Day), 1919 in Hutton, Alberta Jack attended Sunny Alberta School. In his early years he took on jobs with threshing crews, worked for J. Royer and spent two years in the Roiling Hills district with the P.F.R.A. He and his brothers operated the Flanagan Ranch until Jack took it over in 1971. He married Evelyn Givens on December 16th, 1949 in the One Tree District and together they ranched until Jack entered the Auxiliary Hospital in 1996. He had a strong love of family and devoted his life to ranching. Jack played ball in Cessford and had been the “Chute Boss” for the Sand Hill Roping Club for many years.

He was predeceased by his mother Mary in 1972 and father Ernest in 1974.

Besides his loving wife Evelyn, Jack is  survived by his children Dianne and her husband Rev. Tom Rutherford and their children Twiladawn, Shannon and Sean and great-granddaughter Joanna of St. Thomas, Ontario, Bob and his wife Brenda and their children Chad and Cory of Cessford and Betty and her husband Randy Landis and their children Terrill, Tanya and Lori of Rose Lynn; sisters Helen (Warren) Fulton of Duchess and Edith Rooke of Brooks as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14th from Duchess Mennonite Church. Rev. Charles Ramer officiated. Honorary pallbearers were all of his friends. Active pallbearers were Herschell Wright, Murray Suitor, John Bogi, Mike McNiven, Brad Gardner and Dale Christman.

Interment followed at Brooks Cemetery.
