GOLD – Mrs. Ruby May Gold (Cochrane-Swanson) passed away suddenly at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary on December 13th, 1995 at the age of 73 years.
Born on October 7th, 1922,at Orkney, Saskatchewan. Ruby was the only daughter of Eldon and Lucy Cochrane. She grew up on the family farm and attended school at Zepher, Whitewater and Orkney. In 1940, she attended Normal School in Saskatoon and following graduation taught at Hillendale, Masefield and Alfalfa Valley, all in Saskatchewan. She married Eric Swanson on June 1st, 1944 and together they managed the family farm while Ruby continued to teach until moving to Cardston in 1964. They came to Brooks in 1966 where she taught at Brooks Primary School from 1966 until her retirement in 1986. Ruby was very active in the Senior‘s Out Reach Program, the Brooks Health Centre Volunteer Program, Brooks and District Retired Teachers Group and the Ladies Auxiliary, EID Legion, Brooks.
She was predeceased by her parents, one brother Al, an infant grandson Clay, her second husband Jim and her best friend and father of her children Eric Swanson, who died on November 26th, 1995. Ruby was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by her four daughters Norma Galloway and her husband Bill of Brooks, Linda Chamberlain and her husband Tim of Grande Prairie, Gayle Christman and her husband Ray of Medicine Hat and Colleen Swanson of Brooks; her two sons Lorne and his wife June of Brooks and Blaine and Laurie of Brooks; ten grand-children Tom, Bobbi Lynn, Todd, Cody, Dawna, Kelsey, Jade, Jennise, Kathy and Matthew who was grandma’s dear little boy; her great-grandson Jordan; her brother Gordon Cochrane of Swift Current, Saskatchewan and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 18th, 1995 from the Brooks United Church at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Frank Lough officiated.
Honorary pallbearers were Helena Borth, Marg Romuld, Grace Harris, Tim and Merlin Cochrane and her special neighbours and her fellow teachers. Active pallbearers were her nephews Perry, Pat, Kelly, Brian, Dwayne and Gene Cochrane.
Interment followed at Brooks Cemetery.
