GRAY – Mrs. Nancy Helen Gray passed away in the Brooks Health Centre Nursing Home on Thursday, May 29th, 1997 at the age of 93 years.
Born on July 28th, 1903 in Orleans, Nebraska Helen received her education in Nebraska and went on to teach school for seven years. She married Clarence Gray from Oklahoma on June 1st, 1928 and they started farming. In 1930 they moved to Brooks, Alberta to begin again in the One Tree District, where there was neither a fence post or ploughed furrow in sight. Following Clarence‘s death on April 20th, 1973 Helen remained on the farm until 1993, moving into the Newbrook Lodge and then to the Nursing Home. She loved gardening, reading, doing crosswords and had taken an active role on the farm until her retirement. Helen also loved spending time with her family and helping others. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence, three sisters and two brothers.
Helen is survived by her daughter Louise Spicer of Brooks; 8 grandchildren Jim Spicer of Brooks, Judy Adams of Medicine Hat, Val (Ken) Hok of Brooks, Bob (Laurie) Spicer of Brooks, Bev (Mike) Unsworth of Hanna, Tom (Cathy) Spicer of Edmonton, Randy Spicer and Shelley Spicer of Brooks; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Pat Drees and Wilma Reid of Idaho; sister-in-law Marjorie McCord of Nebraska as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 2nd at 2:00p.m.from Smith’s Memorial Chapel. Rev. George Edmonds officiated. Honorary pallbearers were Judy Adams, Val Hok, Bev Unsworth, Shelley Spicer, Laurie Ramsdale and Cathy Spicer. Active pallbearers were Jim Spicer, Bob Spicer, Tom Spicer, Randy Spicer, Ken Hok and Mike Unsworth.
