LELEK — Effie Lelek passed away in Brooks on May 28th, 2001 at the age of 93 years.
Born in Vierboviec, Ukraine. she immigrated to Calgary in 1921 to join her parents. Effie and Steve Lelek were married at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Calgary in 1922. They mined in Wayne and Drumheller and farmed in Imperial Colony before Effie retired to Brooks in 1987. She loved children. enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens and cooking for others.
Effie will be best remembered for her Catholic faith and devotion, her warmth, love, compassion, fairness, encouragement in others, generosity, creativity in ceramics and crochet, coffee, goodies, grandma’s special hand shakes and bottomless candy dish.
She was predeceased by her husband Steve and son Joseph and his wife Elaine.
Effie is survived by her loving family, sons Bill and his wife Joyce of Calgary, John and his wife Susan of Patricia. Michael and his wife Judy of Claresholm and David and his wife Rhonda of Lethbride; daughters Mary Foley and her husband Cornelius of Great Falls, Olga Daneyko and her husband Manfred of Edmonton and Theresa Hallihan and her husband Mike of Calgary: 25 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Prayer services were held Friday, June 1st at 7:00 PM from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mr. Robert Wilson officiated. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, June 2nd at 10.30 AM from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Very Reverend Bryan Frank celebrant.
Honorary Pallbearers were all of Effie’s grandchildren and her many special friends. Active Pallbearers were Ken Lelek, Gordon Lelek, Shawn Lelek. Calvin Lelek, Stephan Foley, Jerid Lelek, Daniel Hallihan and Tim Lelek.
