SPENCE – John Phillip Spence died in the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta on April 17, 1988 at the age of 58 years.
He was born in Hanna, Alberta on May 6, 1929 and grew up in the Sunnynook district and received his schooling there.
He married Gwendolyn Hansen on June 30, 1954 in Sunnynook.
He was involved in oilfield work and later farmed until moving to Cessford in 1968 where he owned and operated a waterwell drilling company.
He was an avid curler and curled in Pollockville.
He was predeceased by his wife Gwen on February 15,1986.
Surviving are four daughters, Audrey and her husband Ken Wallace of Kelowna, B.C., Sandra and her husband John Genovese of Patricia, Teresa Spence of Red Deer and Leslie and her husband Earl Kading of Cessford, a son Kelly of Cessford, seven grandchildren, eight brothers and sisters, Louis Spence of Hoadley, Alberta, Edward Spence of Devizes, Wiltshire, England, Rita McDonald of Roselyn, Alberta, Sister Mary of Claybank, Sask., Sister Teresa of Lethbridge, Patricia Babb of Hanna, Thomas Spence of Costa Rica, Central America, Bernard Spence of Sylvan Lake arid numerous nieces and nephews.
Prayer service was held on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. and funeral mass was celebrated on Wednesday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Reverend John Petravicius celebrant. Interment followed in the Brooks Cemetery.
SPENCE – Gwendolyn Augusta Spence of Cessford, Alberta died on February 5, 1986 in the Brooks Health Centre at the age of 49 years.
She was born on May 4, 1936 at Square Deal, Alberta and married John Philip Spence on June’ 30, 1954. They lived in the Sunnynook area for several years then moved to Cessford where they have lived for he past 17 years.
She drove a school bus for the Berry Creek School Division for 14 years and enjoyed curling, playing and coaching softball and was fond of animals.
She was predeceased by an infant brother, David in 1937 and her father, Hans George Hansen in 1957.
Surviving are her husband John of Cessford; a son Kelly of Cessford; four daughters, Audrey and her husband Ken Wallace of Red Deer, Sandra and her husband John Genovese of Duchess, Teresa Spence of Red Deer, Leslie and her husband Earl Kading of Cessford; five grandchildren; her mother Daisy Hansen; a brother David and sisters, Jean, Elsie, Barbara, Georgia and Virginia and families.
Prayer service was held on Monday, February 17 at 7 p.m. at Smith Memorial Chapel and funeral mass was held on Tuesday, February 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Reverend (rest missing).
